a clip from Kim Jameson’s film documentary working title “Empowerment Within” about holistic healing for the Black community.
Gabby Oglesby, MSW
Gabby Oglesby (they/she) is a Black/Afro-Caribbean queer creative, world builder, and light bearer. Coming from a middle class background Gabby has been shaped by the resilience and complexities of her upbringing and community. As a survivor Gabby recognizes the necessity of embarking upon a healing path as a way to reclaim wholeness.
Gabby navigates Chronic Fatigue Syndrome making her differently abled. This disability has become a source of enlightenment as she invites others into learning to rest. Rooted in the legacy of fierce (but tired) Black femmes, Gabby walks this path in homage to them.
A breaker of generational cycles of violence and trauma, Gabby’s journey toward healing began with their own unmetabolized pain. Through deep introspection, inner child work, mindfulness, body-based practices, radical friendships, and time living in the Kingdom of eSwatini, Africa, they found their way back home to themselves.
For over a decade, Gabby has worked in the nonprofit sector, supporting diverse communities—including people with substance use and co-occurring mental illness, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, survivors of domestic and sexual violence, those impacted by incarceration, and fellow activists/organizers/healers. Gabby’s lived experience as a Black, queer, and disabled survivor along with their work in community has revealed their calling as a healing justice practitioner.
Recognizing the power of mindfulness, yoga, and rest practices, Gabby is dedicated to making these practices accessible to their community. They believe centering wellness is an act of resistance and a pathway to collective liberation..
In their free time, Gabby enjoys traveling, immersing in nature, marveling at the sky, listening to birdsong, sunset chasing, laughing with loved ones, engaging her senses, reading, making jewelry, creating art, singing, and dancing. A lover of self-expression, they live for putting together a lewk! As someone navigating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and c-PTSD, Gabby prioritizes rest and restoration, embracing them as essential to a balanced, fulfilling life.
